When it comes to buying your first camera, there’s a lot to think about. Image quality, portability, battery life, features… the list goes on. On top of that you may be buying a camera for a different purpose than the next person, but let’s assume we are on the same page here and you want to try your hand at some introductory photography…

When I decided to pursue my hobby of photography more earnestly, one of the pieces of equipment that I was very keen to get my hands on was one of DJI’s fantastic drones. After watching hours and hours of comparison videos and footage compilations, I was so excited to take my photo and video game to new heights (both literally and figuratively).
I was fortunate enough to have received my DJI Phantom drone as a gift and was incredibly excited to start flying. The gift came with a message from my family: “Find a way to turn this into a way to earn some income.” To be honest I hadn’t much considered this as I was just excited to see what I could create with it, but eventually as I became more adept in the use of my drone, it started to make more and more sense that perhaps I could make some money on the side flying my drone for people. What really was the first step in all this was an article from CNET titled How to get your drone license (and legally make money). If you’re interested in taking the first steps to get your own FAA license it's a good read. I’ve linked it here.

As some of you may know, about half a year ago I decided to take the time to pick up my camera and make more of an effort to exercise my creativity and invest my time into photography and videography. I had bought a Canon T6i from the store which up until that point had sat unused aside from the occasional photos on a vacation. I didn’t really know what shooting in RAW format was or anything about how to arrange a gallery or use Adobe Lightroom or even what all the different functions on the camera manipulated. I had a lot of learning to do. Since I made the decision to figure out how to use all these tools, I’ve found so much joy in connecting with my creativity and the amazing community of creators that have inspired me to push my content forward and evolve my style. However, growth doesn’t happen without a little discomfort and that has most recently come in the form of straying outside my normal photo subjects to something I have almost no experience with- photographing people.

It’s a Friday afternoon…
I’m sitting at my desk tabbing feverishly between Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, a Youtube product review, and a few other comparison articles. I look at the clock and look back down at my computer screen. At least 10 different videos show up on my YouTube recommendations all saying how one bit of equipment is better than the other or that you most definitely shouldn’t buy this product versus that one. I look up again to find an hour has passed. Frustrated, I shut my laptop and get up from my desk. Another hour wasted.

About 10 Years ago, I visited New York with my junior high class as part of a field trip…
To be honest I hadn’t thought much about going back until recently. A few friends had made the decision to move out East from their homes in California to try their hand at a completely new lifestyle away from everything we had become accustomed to at home. To them, New York represented a new opportunity, a fresh start, a new job, and a general departure from the previous lives they lived back home. I was curious and wanted to really glimpse into my friends’ lives and see if this city of dreamers had given them a new outlook on life or was just purely hype.
